Local organizations count too. A current profile with the Boston Bar Association or the Massachusetts Bar Association (both run lawyer referral services) is a trusted local listing that points to your firm. We check which ones you have, and which ones are missing or out of date.
Law firm SEO and marketing in Boston
The Boston metro has more than 3,000 law offices, from downtown Boston to Cambridge, Lowell and Quincy. Most people looking for a lawyer here start with a search on their phone and call one of the first firms they see. We help Boston-area firms show up in Google Maps, search results and AI answers, then turn those searches into signed clients.

A crowded market with money behind it
Boston is one of the country’s major legal markets. The metro covers seven counties across Massachusetts and New Hampshire, from Boston and Cambridge out to Lowell and Quincy. Here’s what U.S. Census Bureau data for the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro (County Business Patterns 2023 for legal services, American Community Survey 2020–2024) means for your marketing:
| Measure | Boston metro | What it means for your firm |
|---|---|---|
| Law offices | 3,091 | Most practice areas have dozens of firms competing for the same searches |
| Offices with 5 or more staff | 895, almost one in three | Plenty of competitors with real marketing budgets |
| Median household income | $115,863, about 44% above the US median | Clients who can pay, and fees that support marketing |
| Population | 4.95 million | Enough demand for specialist firms, not only generalists |
What Boston search results look like
We ran common searches from a Boston location in November 2026, mostly on desktop, including “criminal defense attorney boston”, “immigration lawyer boston”, “divorce lawyer boston” and “personal injury lawyer boston”. Four things stood out:
The map comes first
Google showed its three-firm map on every search we checked but one, and it led the page for most case-type searches. That makes your Google Business Profile and local SEO the first job.
AI answers sit on top of the urgent searches
Google’s AI Overview led the page for “personal injury lawyer boston” on desktop and mobile, and for “dui lawyer boston” on mobile, before the map and the regular results. On mobile, the injury search showed no map at all. We track whether your firm is named in those answers, and in ChatGPT, through our AI search work.
Directories take spots
Super Lawyers, Justia, Yelp and Best Lawyers showed up in the results, and the AI answer for “dui lawyer boston” cited Justia and Super Lawyers as sources. A complete, consistent profile on each one helps twice.
Demand is real, but specific
Google estimates about 2,900 searches a month for “criminal defense attorney boston”, 1,600 for “immigration lawyer boston” and 880 for “divorce lawyer boston”, plus longer phrases and searches for nearby towns. That’s why we build pages for the cases you want, not one page for “lawyer Boston”.
Pages built for how Boston clients search
People here rarely search for “a lawyer”. They search for a case type, a town or a question about Massachusetts law. We plan your law firm SEO around those searches, one page each:
- Case type plus city: “criminal defense attorney boston”, “immigration lawyer boston”. Clear intent, and fewer competitors than the broad terms.
- Towns and counties: “divorce lawyer cambridge ma”, “criminal defense attorney lowell”, “estate planning attorney quincy”. Clients often want a firm near the courthouse they’ll be in.
- Massachusetts law questions: “can I sue if I was partly at fault in Massachusetts”. Under the state’s comparative negligence law, an injured person can recover as long as their negligence isn’t greater than the total negligence of the people they sue, with damages reduced by their share (G.L. c. 231, § 85). Injury clients ask about it before they call.
- Spanish-language searches: Google estimates about 110 searches a month for “abogado de inmigracion boston”. A translated page rarely ranks; a page written for the words people actually search can.
- Your attorneys: each lawyer’s name plus “lawyer”, which is what people check right before they call.

Local courts and bar groups, used properly
Boston-area firms work across the Suffolk County Superior Court, the divisions of the Boston Municipal Court, the Suffolk Probate and Family Court, the Middlesex County Superior Court (which also sits in Lowell), the Cambridge District Court and the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Those names belong on your practice pages where they’re relevant, because they’re what clients and AI answers connect with a local firm.
Massachusetts’ advertising rules, built in
Massachusetts has its own rules for lawyer advertising, updated in 2022, and some of them catch firms out online:
A named lawyer or firm
Rule 7.2(d) of the Massachusetts Rules of Professional Conduct asks every communication about your services to include the name of at least one lawyer or law firm responsible for its content.
“Certified” needs a source
Under Rule 7.2(c), you can say you specialize if it isn’t misleading, but a claim to be certified must name the certifier, and the certifier must be approved by a state authority or accredited by the American Bar Association, or the ad must say it’s a private organization whose standards aren’t regulated by either.
No live pitches
Rule 7.3(b) bars seeking paid work by live person-to-person contact, such as in person or by live phone call, except with lawyers, people you have a family, close personal, or prior business or professional relationship with, and organizations or businesses in connection with their own activities.
Timing matters after an injury
Rule 7.3(c)(3) bars a paid solicitation, even by letter or email, when you know or should know the person’s physical, mental or emotional state means they can’t judge who to hire. The rule’s commentary gives someone in active medical treatment for a traumatic injury as an example.
We write your pages, ads and Google Business Profile posts within these rules and flag anything that needs your sign-off. You still have the final say on what your firm advertises, but you shouldn’t have to catch rule problems yourself.

Questions firms ask
Do you have an office in Boston?
No. PointClick is a California-based company and our team works remotely, so we meet Boston clients on Zoom or by phone. Your marketing is about your office and your market, not ours: we plan around your address, your courts and the competitors your clients actually see.
Do you work with firms in Cambridge, Lowell and the rest of the metro?
Yes. We work with firms anywhere in the Boston area, including Cambridge, Lowell, Quincy, Newton and Woburn, and the metro's New Hampshire side. If you have more than one office, each one gets its own Google Business Profile and its own location page on your website.
Can you get my downtown Boston firm into the map results in Cambridge or Lowell?
Sometimes, but distance matters. Google weighs how close a firm is to the person searching, so your profile is strongest near your office. Further out, reviews, a strong profile and good pages for those areas widen your reach. We don't create virtual offices to cover more towns: Google suspends profiles for that, and it puts your firm at risk.
How much does law firm marketing in Boston cost with PointClick?
The PointClick Client System starts at $2,500/month. Firms in competitive practice areas, like personal injury and criminal defense, often need more content and link building, so they may invest more. Paid ads are an add-on at $1,500/month plus the ad spend you pay Google and Meta directly. We quote a firm number after the free Growth Audit.
How long before SEO brings in cases?
Some fixes help within weeks, like a Google Business Profile that's finally complete or a form that actually reaches you. Rankings for competitive Boston searches take months. We recommend at least three months for SEO, and if you need calls sooner, Google Ads and Local Services Ads can bring them in while rankings build.
