Local organizations count too. A current profile with the Chicago Bar Association (which runs a lawyer referral service), the Illinois State Bar Association or the Will County Bar Association is a trusted local listing that points to your firm. We check which ones you have, and which ones are missing or out of date.
Law firm SEO and marketing in Chicago
The Chicago metro has more than 6,200 law offices, from the Loop to Naperville, Joliet and Evanston. Most people looking for a lawyer here start with a search on their phone and call one of the first firms they see. We help Chicago-area firms show up in Google Maps, search results and AI answers, then turn those searches into signed clients.

A crowded market with money behind it
Chicago is a huge legal market. The metro covers 13 counties around the City of Chicago, from Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will in Illinois to Lake and Porter in Indiana. Here’s what U.S. Census Bureau data for the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro (County Business Patterns 2023 for legal services, American Community Survey 2020–2024) means for your marketing:
| Measure | Chicago metro | What it means for your firm |
|---|---|---|
| Law offices | 6,226 | Most practice areas have dozens, often hundreds, of firms competing for the same searches |
| Offices with 5 or more staff | 1,683, about one in four | Plenty of competitors with real marketing budgets |
| Median household income | $90,887, about 13% above the US median | Clients who can pay, and fees that support marketing |
| Population | 9.37 million | Enough demand for specialist firms, not only generalists |
What Chicago search results look like
We ran common searches from a Chicago location in November 2026, mostly on desktop, including “divorce lawyer chicago”, “immigration lawyer chicago”, “dui lawyer chicago” and “personal injury lawyer chicago”. Four things stood out:
The map comes first
On desktop, Google showed its three-firm map on every search we checked, and it was the first thing on the page for most case-type searches. That makes your Google Business Profile and local SEO the first job.
AI answers sit on top of the urgent searches
Google’s AI Overview led the page for “personal injury lawyer chicago” and “dui lawyer chicago”, on desktop and mobile, before the regular results. We track whether your firm is named in those answers, and in ChatGPT, through our AI search work.
Directories take spots
Justia ranked first for “car accident lawyer chicago” and “workers comp lawyer chicago”, and Super Lawyers, Avvo, Yelp and LawInfo showed up across the results. AI answers cited Justia and Super Lawyers as sources. A complete, consistent profile on each one helps twice.
Demand is real, but specific
Google estimates about 6,600 searches a month for “divorce lawyer chicago”, 3,600 for “immigration lawyer chicago” and 2,400 for “criminal defense attorney chicago”, plus longer phrases and searches for nearby towns. That’s why we build pages for the cases you want, not one page for “lawyer Chicago”.
Pages built for how Chicago clients search
People here rarely search for “a lawyer”. They search for a case type, a town or a question about Illinois law. We plan your law firm SEO around those searches, one page each:
- Case type plus city: “divorce lawyer chicago”, “workers comp lawyer chicago”. Clear intent, and fewer competitors than the broad terms.
- Towns and counties: “family lawyer naperville”, “dui lawyer joliet”, “estate planning attorney evanston”. Clients often want a firm near the courthouse they’ll be in.
- Illinois law questions: “can I sue if I was partly at fault in Illinois”. Illinois lets an injured person recover as long as their share of the fault is not more than 50%, with the damages cut by that share; above 50%, the claim is barred (735 ILCS 5/2-1116). Injury clients ask about it before they call.
- Spanish-language searches: “abogado de inmigración en chicago”. Google estimates about 140 searches a month for “abogado de inmigracion chicago” alone. A translated page rarely ranks; a page written for the words people actually search can.
- Your attorneys: each lawyer’s name plus “lawyer”, which is what people check right before they call.

Local courts and bar groups, used properly
Chicago-area firms work across the Circuit Court of Cook County, with its main courthouse at the Richard J. Daley Center, the 18th Judicial Circuit Court in Wheaton for DuPage County, the 12th Judicial Circuit Court in Joliet for Will County and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Those names belong on your practice pages where they’re relevant, because they’re what clients and AI answers connect with a local firm.
Illinois’s advertising rules, built in
Illinois has its own rules for lawyer advertising, and some of them catch firms out online:
A responsible lawyer and address on every ad
Rule 7.2(a) asks for the name and office address of at least one lawyer or law firm responsible for each advertisement’s content.
Careful with past results
Rule 7.1 bars false or misleading communications, and its comment warns that truthful reports of past results can still mislead if they suggest other clients will get the same outcome.
Directories and lead services need disclosure
Under Rule 7.2(c), amended in 2025, a lawyer who gets clients through, or pays, an intermediary connecting service such as a directory or lead generator has to disclose that relationship to the client and take reasonable steps, like written verification from the service, to check it follows the rules.
“Advertising Material” on targeted messages
Rule 7.3(c) requires those words on the envelope, and at the start and end of any recorded or electronic message, when you write to someone known to need help in a particular matter. Rule 7.3(a) bars live, real-time solicitation for gain.
We write your pages, ads and Google Business Profile posts within these rules and flag anything that needs your sign-off. You still have the final say on what your firm advertises, but you shouldn’t have to catch rule problems yourself.

Questions firms ask
Do you have an office in Chicago?
No. PointClick is a California-based company and our team works remotely, so we meet Chicago clients on Zoom or by phone. Your marketing is about your office and your market, not ours: we plan around your address, your courts and the competitors your clients actually see.
Do you work with firms in Naperville, Joliet, Evanston and the rest of the metro?
Yes. We work with firms anywhere in the Chicago area, including Cook County, DuPage County, Will County, Lake County and Northwest Indiana. If you have more than one office, each one gets its own Google Business Profile and its own location page on your website.
Can you get my downtown Chicago firm into the map results in Naperville or Joliet?
Sometimes, but distance matters. Google weighs how close a firm is to the person searching, so your profile is strongest near your office. Further out, reviews, a strong profile and good pages for those areas widen your reach. We don't create virtual offices to cover more towns: Google suspends profiles for that, and it puts your firm at risk.
How much does law firm marketing in Chicago cost with PointClick?
The PointClick Client System starts at $2,500/month. Firms in competitive practice areas, like personal injury and criminal defense, often need more content and link building, so they may invest more. Paid ads are an add-on at $1,500/month plus the ad spend you pay Google and Meta directly. We quote a firm number after the free Growth Audit.
How long before SEO brings in cases?
Some fixes help within weeks, like a Google Business Profile that's finally complete or a form that actually reaches you. Rankings for competitive Chicago searches take months. We recommend at least three months for SEO, and if you need calls sooner, Google Ads and Local Services Ads can bring them in while rankings build.
