Local organizations count too. A current profile with the Bar Association of San Francisco (which runs the SF-Marin Lawyer Referral and Information Service), the Alameda County Bar Association or the Contra Costa County Bar Association is a trusted local listing that points to your firm. We check which ones you have, and which ones are missing or out of date.
Law firm SEO and marketing in San Francisco
The San Francisco metro has more than 3,100 law offices, from downtown San Francisco to Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek and San Mateo. Most people looking for a lawyer here start with a search on their phone and call one of the first firms they see. We help Bay Area firms show up in Google Maps, search results and AI answers, then turn those searches into signed clients.

A crowded market with money behind it
San Francisco is a big legal market with high incomes behind it. The metro covers five counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo. Here’s what U.S. Census Bureau data for the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro (County Business Patterns 2023 for legal services, American Community Survey 2020–2024) means for your marketing:
| Measure | San Francisco metro | What it means for your firm |
|---|---|---|
| Law offices | 3,152 | Most practice areas have dozens of firms competing for the same searches |
| Offices with 5 or more staff | 1,024, about one in three | Plenty of competitors with real marketing budgets |
| Median household income | $136,027, about 68% above the US median | Clients who can pay, and fees that support marketing |
| Population | 4.65 million | Enough demand for specialist firms, not only generalists |
What San Francisco search results look like
We ran common searches from a San Francisco location in November 2026, mostly on desktop, including “immigration lawyer san francisco”, “divorce lawyer san francisco”, “criminal defense attorney san francisco” and “personal injury lawyer san francisco”. Four things stood out:
The map is almost always there
On desktop, Google showed its three-firm map on every search we checked, and it sat at the very top for searches like “immigration lawyer san francisco” and “dui lawyer san francisco”. That makes your Google Business Profile and local SEO the first job.
AI answers lead the injury and criminal searches
Google’s AI Overview came before the map for “personal injury lawyer san francisco” and “criminal defense attorney san francisco”, and on a phone it was the first thing on the page for the injury search. We track whether your firm is named in those answers, and in ChatGPT, through our AI search work.
Directories and the local bar show up
Super Lawyers, Justia, Best Lawyers, LawInfo and Yelp took spots in the results, and AI answers cited Super Lawyers and the Bar Association of San Francisco’s website as sources. A complete, consistent profile on each one helps twice.
Demand is real, but specific
Google estimates about 1,300 searches a month for “immigration lawyer san francisco”, 590 for “divorce lawyer san francisco” and 480 for “criminal defense attorney san francisco”, plus longer phrases and searches for nearby cities. That’s why we build pages for the cases you want, not one page for “lawyer San Francisco”.
Pages built for how San Francisco clients search
People here rarely search for “a lawyer”. They search for a case type, a city or a question about California law. We plan your law firm SEO around those searches, one page each:
- Case type plus city: “immigration lawyer san francisco”, “workers comp lawyer san francisco”. Clear intent, and fewer competitors than the broad terms.
- Cities and counties: “divorce lawyer oakland”, “estate planning attorney walnut creek”, “dui lawyer san mateo”. Clients often want a firm near the courthouse they’ll be in.
- California law questions: “can my employer enforce a non-compete in California”. California voids employee noncompete clauses, however narrowly they’re written, unless a statutory exception applies (Business and Professions Code § 16600). Bay Area employees changing jobs ask about it before they call.
- Spanish-language searches: “abogado de inmigracion san francisco”, about 40 searches a month on its own. A translated page rarely ranks; a page written for the words people actually search can.
- Your attorneys: each lawyer’s name plus “lawyer”, which is what people check right before they call.

Local courts and bar groups, used properly
Bay Area firms work across the Superior Court of California for the County of San Francisco, the Alameda County Superior Court, the superior courts of the other metro counties and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, which sits in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. Those names belong on your practice pages where they’re relevant, because they’re what clients and AI answers connect with a local firm.
California’s advertising rules, built in
California covers lawyer advertising in both its Rules of Professional Conduct and the State Bar Act:
Name the lawyer and the office
Rule 7.2(c) requires the name and address of at least one lawyer or firm responsible for each ad. Since January 2026, Business and Professions Code § 6157.2 also asks for the city, town or county of at least one real office, or the address the State Bar has on record.
Check every badge
The same section now bars mentioning an award or recognition unless it wasn’t given for membership and the organization doesn’t charge or ask for a fee for it.
Immigration ads carry a statement
Under § 6157.5, ads for immigration or naturalization services must say the lawyer is an active licensee of the State Bar, and an ad in Spanish has to say it in Spanish.
No paid runners
State law makes it unlawful to act as a runner or capper, soliciting cases for a lawyer in places like hospitals, jails, courthouses or on the street (§ 6152). We never build your marketing around in-person approaches.
We write your pages, ads and Google Business Profile posts within these rules and flag anything that needs your sign-off. You still have the final say on what your firm advertises, but you shouldn’t have to catch rule problems yourself.

Questions firms ask
Do you have an office in San Francisco?
No. PointClick is a California-based company and our team works remotely, so we meet San Francisco clients on Zoom or by phone. Your marketing is about your office and your market, not ours: we plan around your address, your courts and the competitors your clients actually see.
Do you work with firms in Oakland, Walnut Creek, San Mateo and the rest of the Bay Area?
Yes. We work with firms anywhere in the San Francisco metro, including Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Marin County and San Mateo County. If you have more than one office, each one gets its own Google Business Profile and its own location page on your website.
Can you get my San Francisco firm into the map results in Oakland or Walnut Creek?
Sometimes, but distance matters. Google weighs how close a firm is to the person searching, so your profile is strongest near your office. Further out, reviews, a strong profile and good pages for those areas widen your reach. We don't create virtual offices to cover more towns: Google suspends profiles for that, and it puts your firm at risk.
How much does law firm marketing in San Francisco cost with PointClick?
The PointClick Client System starts at $2,500/month. Firms in competitive practice areas, like personal injury and criminal defense, often need more content and link building, so they may invest more. Paid ads are an add-on at $1,500/month plus the ad spend you pay Google and Meta directly. We quote a firm number after the free Growth Audit.
How long before SEO brings in cases?
Some fixes help within weeks, like a Google Business Profile that's finally complete or a form that actually reaches you. Rankings for competitive San Francisco searches take months. We recommend at least three months for SEO, and if you need calls sooner, Google Ads and Local Services Ads can bring them in while rankings build.
