Local organizations count too. A current profile with the Santa Clara County Bar Association (which runs a lawyer referral service) or the Santa Clara County Trial Lawyers Association is a trusted local listing that points to your firm. We check which ones you have, and which ones are missing or out of date.
Law firm SEO and marketing in San Jose
The San Jose metro has more than 900 law offices, from downtown San Jose to Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto and Gilroy. Most people looking for a lawyer here start with a search on their phone and call one of the first firms they see. We help San Jose-area firms show up in Google Maps, search results and AI answers, then turn those searches into signed clients.

- 942 law offices in the metro
- 292 of them with 5 or more staff
- Median household income $162,111
- 1.97 million people, 2 counties

A crowded market with money behind it
San Jose has fewer law offices than San Francisco, but its clients have more to spend. The metro covers two counties: Santa Clara and San Benito. Here’s what U.S. Census Bureau data for the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metro (County Business Patterns 2023 for legal services, American Community Survey 2020–2024) means for your marketing:
| Measure | San Jose metro | What it means for your firm |
|---|---|---|
| Law offices | 942 | Most practice areas have dozens of firms competing for the same searches |
| Offices with 5 or more staff | 292, about one in three | Plenty of competitors with real marketing budgets |
| Median household income | $162,111, about twice the US median | Clients who can pay, and fees that support marketing |
| Population | 1.97 million | Enough demand for specialist firms, not only generalists |
What San Jose search results look like
We ran common searches from a San Jose location in November 2026, mostly on desktop, including “criminal defense attorney san jose”, “divorce lawyer san jose”, “dui lawyer san jose” and “personal injury lawyer san jose”. Four things stood out:
The map is on every desktop search
Google showed its three-firm map on every desktop search we checked, and it led the page for searches like “divorce lawyer san jose” and “car accident lawyer san jose”. That makes your Google Business Profile and local SEO the first job.
AI answers come first on several urgent searches
Google’s AI Overview sat above the map for “criminal defense attorney san jose”, “immigration lawyer san jose” and “personal injury lawyer san jose”. On a phone, the injury search showed no map at all. We track whether your firm is named in those answers, and in ChatGPT, through our AI search work.
Directories take spots
Justia, Super Lawyers, LawInfo and Yelp showed up in the results, and AI answers cited Justia and Yelp as sources. A complete, consistent profile on each one helps twice.
Demand is real, but specific
Google estimates about 1,000 searches a month each for “criminal defense attorney san jose”, “divorce lawyer san jose” and “immigration lawyer san jose”, and 880 for “car accident lawyer san jose”, plus longer phrases and searches for nearby cities. That’s why we build pages for the cases you want, not one page for “lawyer San Jose”.
Pages built for how San Jose clients search
People here rarely search for “a lawyer”. They search for a case type, a city or a question about California law. We plan your law firm SEO around those searches, one page each:
- Case type plus city: “dui lawyer san jose”, “workers comp lawyer san jose”. Clear intent, and fewer competitors than the broad terms.
- Cities and counties: “divorce lawyer sunnyvale”, “estate planning attorney palo alto”, “criminal lawyer gilroy”. Clients often want a firm near the courthouse they’ll be in.
- California law questions: “does my employer own my side project in California”. An employment agreement can’t make you hand over an invention you developed entirely on your own time, without the employer’s equipment, supplies, facilities or trade secrets, unless it relates to the employer’s business or research or came out of work you did for them (Labor Code § 2870). Silicon Valley workers ask about it before they call.
- Spanish-language searches: “abogado de inmigracion san jose”, about 70 searches a month on its own. A translated page rarely ranks; a page written for the words people actually search can.
- Your attorneys: each lawyer’s name plus “lawyer”, which is what people check right before they call.

Local courts and bar groups, used properly
San Jose-area firms work across the Superior Court of California for the County of Santa Clara, the San Benito County Superior Court in Hollister and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, which has a courthouse in San Jose. Those names belong on your practice pages where they’re relevant, because they’re what clients and AI answers connect with a local firm.
California’s advertising rules, built in
California’s lawyer advertising rules sit in two places, and a few of them catch out firm websites:
“Certified specialist” is a defined term
Rule 7.4 lets you call yourself a certified specialist only if the State Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization, or an entity it accredits, currently certifies you, and the ad names the certifying body. Saying your practice is limited to or concentrated in a field is fine.
“No fee unless we win” needs the costs answer
Business and Professions Code § 6157.2 says a contingency-fee claim must also tell people whether they’re responsible for costs you advance if there’s no recovery. If they never are, no extra wording is needed.
Label targeted messages
Under Rule 7.3(c), a written, recorded or electronic message soliciting someone you know needs help with a specific matter has to carry the word “Advertisement” or similar, at the start and end of a recorded or electronic message, unless it’s obvious from context.
Keep a copy for a year
Section 6159.1 requires whoever pays for an ad to keep a true and correct copy of it for one year.
We write your pages, ads and Google Business Profile posts within these rules and flag anything that needs your sign-off. You still have the final say on what your firm advertises, but you shouldn’t have to catch rule problems yourself.

Questions firms ask
Do you have an office in San Jose?
No. PointClick is a California-based company and our team works remotely, so we meet San Jose clients on Zoom or by phone. Your marketing is about your office and your market, not ours: we plan around your address, your courts and the competitors your clients actually see.
Do you work with firms in Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Gilroy and the rest of the metro?
Yes. We work with firms anywhere in the San Jose area, including the rest of Santa Clara County, from Mountain View and Cupertino to Morgan Hill, and Hollister in San Benito County. If you have more than one office, each one gets its own Google Business Profile and its own location page on your website.
Can you get my San Jose firm into the map results in Palo Alto or Gilroy?
Sometimes, but distance matters. Google weighs how close a firm is to the person searching, so your profile is strongest near your office. Further out, reviews, a strong profile and good pages for those areas widen your reach. We don't create virtual offices to cover more towns: Google suspends profiles for that, and it puts your firm at risk.
How much does law firm marketing in San Jose cost with PointClick?
The PointClick Client System starts at $2,500/month. Firms in competitive practice areas, like personal injury and criminal defense, often need more content and link building, so they may invest more. Paid ads are an add-on at $1,500/month plus the ad spend you pay Google and Meta directly. We quote a firm number after the free Growth Audit.
How long before SEO brings in cases?
Some fixes help within weeks, like a Google Business Profile that's finally complete or a form that actually reaches you. Rankings for competitive San Jose searches take months. We recommend at least three months for SEO, and if you need calls sooner, Google Ads and Local Services Ads can bring them in while rankings build.
